Some seasons arrive like a gentle breeze. September is not one of them.
For many parents, especially moms, the return to school feels like slamming the brakes on summer and jumping straight into a high-speed race. Between packing lunches, navigating traffic, handling meetings, and trying to keep everyone healthy, back to school anxiety can build quickly.
Tension rises. Breathing shortens. Sleep becomes lighter. Patience wears thin.
This is what I help parents with every day through sophrology: a structured method that teaches you how to to regulate stress and emotions.
Why not take advantage of this stressful back-to-school season to try meaningful, intentional resets that carry you through with more grounding?
Here’s how.
Why back-to-school stress affects more than just your schedule
Stress doesn’t live in your calendar. It lives in your body. And when it’s left unchecked, it compounds.
In my conversations with Asmaa, our naturopathic chef, she often reminds us how chronic stress ripples through the body. It can trigger inflammation, disturb digestion, affect metabolism, and leave you feeling bloated, foggy, and fatigued. Over time, it can also disrupt hormones, weaken immunity, and drain your energy.
You may notice:
- Irregular hunger and sudden cravings
- Low motivation to move or exercise
- Trouble falling or staying asleep
- Feeling of burnout even after resting
Your to-do list may demand action, but your body is asking for relief, restoration, and regulation.
That’s where sophrology becomes a powerful ally.
How sophrology works to support mind-body resilience
Sophrology is a practical, evidence-informed method that blends breathing techniques, gentle movement, body awareness, and visualization.
It’s widely used across Europe in clinical, educational, and performance settings, from hospitals to schools to corporate environments and it’s gaining traction among parents looking for real tools to manage the load.
Even just a few minutes a day can help you:
- Activate the parasympathetic nervous system
- Create space for relaxation and emotional reset
- Rewire your response to daily triggers
- Support your long-term energy, clarity, and focus
- Reconnect with the sense of safety and stillness within
Here are three helpful techniques to support your sanity during this back-to-school transition.
3 powerful techniques to ease back to school anxiety
Set up the morning routine before stress hits
In my practice, many parents ask how to use breathing techniques to manage morning stress. While breathing can be powerful, the first step I always recommend is organization: because the most effective stress relief often begins before the chaos starts.
If mornings feel overstimulating and exhausting, this simple “reset” can make a big difference:
- Make it visible: Create a magnetic routine chart on the fridge so everyone kids, parents, and nanny knows exactly what needs to happen and when.
- Use visual timers: Children respond well to cues they can see. A countdown clock can make transitions smoother without constant reminders. One of my favourites is the Time Timer, especially helpful for children who thrive with a little extra structure and predictability.
- Shift wake-up times gradually: If the routine still feels rushed, try waking up 15 minutes earlier until you find a calmer, more sustainable rhythm.
Sometimes, the best way to manage stress is to prevent it before it starts, helping the whole family begin the day on steadier ground.
Anchor yourself through points of contact
When your mind is spinning: too many decisions, too many demands, and no idea where to start. This quick grounding technique helps you return to stability and clarity:
- Sit at a table and place both hands flat on its surface.
- Close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath.
- With each inhale, silently repeat: “This is a moment to reset.”
- As you exhale, shift your focus to the point of contact between your palms and the table, feeling its stability and support.
- After a few breaths, expand your awareness to other anchors: your legs against the chair, your feet on the ground.
By connecting with these physical contact points, you send a signal of safety to your nervous system. This reduces emotional overwhelm and supports executive functions, helping you think more clearly and make decisions calmly, even when everything feels like too much.
Reframe the chaos: a 20-year fast-forward
Before you pick up your children or walk into the lively energy of family life, take a quiet moment to pause. So often, we anticipate stress before it even begins: worrying about traffic, noise, unfinished work, errands, and endless tasks. This mental rehearsal of chaos can leave us exhausted before anything has happened.
Instead, try this visualization:
- Close your eyes and imagine yourself 20 years from now.
- Life looks different: the house is quiet, your schedule is lighter, and you finally have time just for yourself.
- From this future, look back at today: at this busy, messy, noisy season of raising your children.
- Notice how meaningful these years are, and how deeply your care and efforts are shaping their identity and values.
This simple shift in perspective can transform tension into gratitude. It helps you reconnect with the bigger picture and enter family time with more presence, patience, and calm.
