Glowing skin smoothie. That’s what I reach for when I want something quick, refreshing, and actually good for me.

Some mornings, I want more than just “healthy.”

I want something that feels good, tastes amazing, and does something real for my body, especially when my skin is acting up, my energy’s low, and I’m trying to stay on track with my summer goals.

But finding something quick, satisfying, and truly nourishing? That’s the challenge.

Even when we choose smoothies or “healthy drinks,” most are packed with sugar or lack the nutrients to actually help us lose weight, detox, or feel energized. They might be natural, but they’re rarely balanced.

So this week, I’m sharing one of my favorite go-to blends. It’s a quick, on-the-go smoothie that works like a summer skincare ritual in a glass. Rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and fiber, it helps support weight loss, calm inflammation, and bring out that inside-out glow, without the sugar crash.

And yes, it actually tastes delicious.

Why your skin (and gut) need a summer reset

Between barbecues, restaurant meals, and long days out, our digestion takes a hit. The result? Fatigued metabolism, puffiness, hormonal shifts, and low energy, all of which can show up on your skin and your mood.

This is where a functional smoothie can make a difference. One that’s:

What’s inside, and why it works

Let’s break down the goodness behind each ingredient. As a naturopathic chef, I always look for recipes where the synergy of ingredients does more than just check the “healthy” box.

  • Organic berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries) Rich in antioxidants and polyphenols that fight inflammation, protect collagen, and support detox pathways
  • Ground flaxseeds and chia seeds High in omega-3s and soluble fiber. These help balance hormones, support bowel regularity, and reduce insulin spikes
  • Pumpkin seeds (freshly ground) One of the best sources of zinc and magnesium, key minerals for hormone regulation, skin repair, and sleep
  • Almond butter and avocado Provide healthy fats that boost satiety, smooth blood sugar, and nourish the skin’s barrier from the inside
  • Spinach or kale (optional but highly recommended) Loaded with folate and chlorophyll, both support liver detoxification and offer antioxidant benefits for the skin and gut
  • Lemon juice and zest Alkalizing and liver-friendly, rich in vitamin C which is essential for collagen synthesis and radiant skin

Tip: Soak your seeds ahead of time. This reduces anti-nutrients and boosts mineral absorption, something your skin and metabolism will thank you for.

How to make it

Here’s the full recipe for one portion:

Fresh smoothie ingredients including blueberries, lemon wedges, flaxseeds, ground seeds, raspberries, and baby spinach.
Each ingredient in this smoothie plays a functional role: from lemon for detox to flaxseeds for hormone balance and berries for anti-inflammatory benefits.

Ingredients

  • 50–75g organic berries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 tbsp ground pumpkin seeds*
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseeds*
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds*
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • ¼ avocado
  • 200–250ml water
  • Juice of ½ lemon and zest if organic
  • A few ice cubes (optional)
  • 1 handful baby spinach or kale (30g – optional)

Instructions

  1. Grind your seeds (best done just before blending)
  2. Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender
  3. Blend for 45 seconds to 1 minute until smooth and creamy
  4. Adjust to taste: add more lemon for brightness or ½ tsp honey if needed
  5. Serve immediately in a tall glass or smoothie bowl topped with berries or toasted seeds

*Note: Soaking seeds for a few hours or overnight improves nutrient absorption and reduces anti-nutrients
