Summer is the season when most of us crave something cold.
An ice cream after dinner. A refreshing afternoon treat. Something sweet to enjoy with family on a hot day.
The problem is that many frozen desserts are loaded with refined sugar, unhealthy fats and very little nutrition. They may satisfy your cravings for a few minutes, but they’re often followed by an energy crash, more hunger and the feeling that you’ve undone all your healthy choices.
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way.
This High Protein Frozen Yogurt has become one of my favourite summer recipes because it proves that healthy eating can be both delicious and deeply nourishing. It’s creamy, naturally sweet, rich in protein and fibre, and made with simple ingredients that are easy to find in your local supermarket.
Even better, it supports many of the goals I hear most often from the women I work with: wanting to lose weight, reduce cravings, improve gut health, gain energy, support healthy ageing and balance your hormones without feeling like they’re constantly on another restrictive diet.
If you’re looking for a healthy frozen dessert that genuinely tastes indulgent, you’re going to love this one.

Why most frozen desserts leave you wanting more
Traditional ice cream is often built around three ingredients: sugar, cream and flavourings.
While delicious, this combination is rapidly digested and can cause significant fluctuations in blood sugar. For many people, especially women over 35, those highs and lows are followed by fatigue, renewed hunger and the desire to snack again shortly afterwards.
It’s one of the reasons so many people tell me they feel trapped in a cycle of cravings.
They try to eat well all day, then one dessert becomes two, followed by more sweet cravings later in the evening.
This isn’t simply a question of willpower.
It’s often your biology responding exactly as it’s designed to.
When meals or snacks lack enough protein, fibre and healthy fats, your body struggles to stay satisfied for long.
That’s why I always encourage building meals and even desserts around nutrients that help your body work with you instead of against you.

Why protein is the secret ingredient
Protein is one of the most powerful nutrients for supporting sustainable weight loss.
It helps you feel satisfied for longer, supports muscle maintenance and contributes to a more stable release of energy throughout the day.
Maintaining muscle is particularly important after the age of 35. As we naturally lose muscle mass over time, our resting metabolic rate gradually decreases, making it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it.
Including quality protein regularly throughout the day helps counteract this process, especially when combined with regular exercise such as walking, resistance training or yoga.
That’s why this recipe provides around 22 grams of protein per serving, far more than a traditional frozen dessert.
Instead of leaving you hungry an hour later, it helps keep you comfortably satisfied while supporting your overall nutrition.
How this dessert supports weight loss without feeling like a diet
One of the biggest misconceptions about weight loss is that success comes from eating less.
In reality, many people benefit more from eating better.
When meals are rich in protein, fibre and healthy fats, they naturally become more satisfying. That means you’re less likely to reach for biscuits, chocolate or sugary snacks later in the day.
This frozen yogurt combines several ingredients that work together beautifully:
- High-quality protein from Greek yogurt and pea protein.
- Fibre from berries and psyllium to support fullness.
- Healthy fats from almond butter and nuts to slow digestion.
- Natural sweetness from berries instead of refined sugar.
The result is a dessert that feels indulgent while supporting your long-term goals.
It’s not about eliminating treats.
It’s about creating treats that nourish you.
Gut health: the foundation most people overlook
One of the most exciting areas of nutrition research today is the relationship between the gut microbiome and overall health.
Inside your digestive system live trillions of microorganisms that influence everything from digestion and immunity to metabolism and even mood.
A healthy, diverse microbiome is supported by eating a variety of fibre-rich whole foods.
That’s one reason I love recipes like this.
The berries provide polyphenols that nourish beneficial gut bacteria.
The psyllium contributes soluble fibre that acts as food for your microbiome while also helping promote regular bowel movements.
The live cultures naturally found in Greek yogurt contribute beneficial bacteria that support digestive health when consumed as part of a balanced diet.
Healthy gut health isn’t about finding one magical ingredient.
It’s about consistently eating real foods that help beneficial bacteria thrive.
Small choices, repeated regularly, often create the biggest long-term changes.
Can a dessert really be anti-inflammatory?
The word anti-inflammatory has become incredibly popular, but what does it actually mean?
Inflammation is a normal part of your body’s defence system. When it becomes chronic, however, it may contribute to a range of health concerns, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some joint conditions.
While no single food can eliminate chronic inflammation, your overall dietary pattern plays an important role.
This recipe includes several ingredients commonly associated with an anti-inflammatory way of eating:
- Mixed berries, naturally rich in anthocyanins and polyphenols.
- Almonds and pistachios, which provide healthy unsaturated fats and vitamin E.
- Optional fresh basil and lemon zest, adding antioxidants and vibrant flavour.
- Greek yogurt, providing protein that supports overall health and satiety.
Rather than focusing on individual “superfoods”, I prefer helping people build meals and recipes that naturally combine a wide variety of protective nutrients.
That’s a far more sustainable approach than chasing the latest health trend.
The truth about detox
Many products promise to “detox” your body.
The reality is that your liver, kidneys, digestive system and skin already perform that role remarkably well.
Instead of looking for expensive detox products, I encourage supporting your body’s natural detoxification processes through everyday habits:
- Eating a colourful variety of fruits and vegetables.
- Prioritising fibre-rich foods.
- Drinking enough water.
- Sleeping well.
- Moving your body regularly.
- Managing stress.
- Including enough protein to support normal liver function.
Recipes like this won’t magically detox your body overnight.
But they do provide nutrients that help support the normal functions your body performs every single day.
That’s a much more realistic and sustainable approach to long-term health.
The recipe: High Protein Frozen Yogurt with berries & crunchy nuts
Serves: 2 generous portions
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Protein: Approximately 22g per serving

Ingredients
Frozen berry yogurt
- 300g organic full-fat Greek yogurt (preferably grass-fed)
- 250g organic frozen mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries and blueberries)
- 35g organic pea protein powder
- 1 tablespoon almond butter
- 1 teaspoon psyllium husk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Stevia drops, to taste (start with 6 to 8 drops and adjust if needed)
Optional, for a more sophisticated café-style flavour
- Finely grated zest of ½ organic lemon
- 4 to 5 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped
Crunchy sundae topping
- 30g toasted pistachios, roughly chopped
- 20g toasted almonds, roughly chopped
- 100g fresh organic strawberries, sliced
- A handful of fresh blueberries
- Unsweetened coconut flakes
- Fresh mint leaves
Optional
- 1 tablespoon hemp hearts
- Cacao nibs for extra crunch
Method
- Toast the pistachios and almonds in a dry pan for 4 to 5 minutes until lightly golden and fragrant. Leave to cool.
- Add the Greek yogurt, frozen berries, vanilla protein powder, almond butter, psyllium, vanilla extract and stevia to a high-speed blender.
- If using, add the lemon zest and chopped basil.
- Blend for 60 to 90 seconds until thick, smooth and creamy.
- Allow the mixture to rest for 3 to 5 minutes so the psyllium can naturally thicken the frozen yogurt.
- Blend again for 10 to 15 seconds until silky smooth.
- Divide into two chilled bowls.
- Top generously with the toasted nuts, fresh berries, coconut flakes, mint and optional hemp hearts or cacao nibs.
- Serve immediately for a soft-serve texture or place in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes for a firmer, scoopable frozen yogurt.
Why every ingredient has a purpose
At MyAuthentikSpoon, I never choose ingredients simply because they’re fashionable.
Every ingredient should earn its place by contributing to flavour, texture, nutrition or all three.
Organic berries: nature’s colourful antioxidants
Berries are among the most nutrient-dense fruits you can eat.
They’re naturally rich in vitamin C, fibre and colourful plant compounds called anthocyanins, which are responsible for their vibrant red, blue and purple colours.
These polyphenols have been widely studied for their role in supporting healthy ageing and helping protect our cells from oxidative stress.
Because berries are naturally lower in sugar than many tropical fruits, they also fit beautifully into a balanced approach to nutrition.
Full-fat Greek yogurt: protein that satisfies
Many people still believe that choosing low-fat products automatically helps with weight loss.
In reality, a moderate amount of healthy fat combined with protein often keeps us satisfied for much longer.
Greek yogurt delivers high-quality protein while creating the creamy texture that makes this dessert feel truly indulgent.
Choosing a plain, unsweetened version also avoids the large amounts of added sugar found in many flavoured yogurts.
Almond butter: healthy fats that make all the difference
Healthy fats don’t just nourish our body.
They transform recipes.
The almond butter creates a richer mouthfeel while providing vitamin E, magnesium and monounsaturated fats that contribute to satiety.
Instead of feeling like a “light” dessert, this frozen yogurt feels luxurious.
That’s an important distinction because healthy eating should never leave you feeling deprived.
Psyllium: a simple ingredient with remarkable benefits
Psyllium is one of my favourite pantry staples.
It’s a gentle source of soluble fibre that absorbs water and naturally thickens recipes without changing their flavour.
In this frozen yogurt, it creates a smoother, creamier texture while supporting digestive health and helping promote more stable blood sugar levels.
It’s also one of the easiest ways to increase your daily fibre intake, something many adults struggle to achieve.
Pistachios and almonds: more than just a topping
The crunchy topping isn’t there just to make the dessert look beautiful.
Texture plays a surprisingly important role in satisfaction.
Chewing crunchy foods encourages us to slow down and enjoy each bite, while nuts provide healthy fats, plant protein, minerals and additional fibre.
The result is a dessert that’s far more satisfying than one that’s simply soft and sweet.

How this recipe helps support hormone balance
Many women begin noticing changes in their body during their mid-thirties and beyond.
Energy fluctuates.
Sleep becomes lighter.
Cravings become stronger.
Weight is easier to gain and harder to lose.
These changes are often influenced by shifting hormones, increased stress and changing lifestyle demands.
While no single recipe can “balance your hormones”, consistent nutrition absolutely helps create the environment your body needs to function at its best.
This frozen yogurt supports that goal by providing:
- High-quality protein to promote stable energy.
- Fibre to support healthy digestion and blood sugar balance.
- Healthy fats that contribute to satiety.
- Colourful fruits rich in protective phytonutrients.
- A naturally lower-sugar alternative to conventional desserts.
Rather than creating another spike-and-crash cycle, it helps provide steady nourishment that supports your body’s natural rhythms.
Why this dessert gives lasting energy instead of an energy crash
Have you ever noticed how traditional ice cream can leave you feeling tired shortly afterwards?
That’s often because it’s high in rapidly absorbed sugar and relatively low in protein and fibre.
This recipe works differently.
Protein slows digestion.
Healthy fats contribute to sustained fullness.
Fibre helps moderate how quickly carbohydrates are absorbed.
Together, these nutrients help create a steadier release of energy instead of the rollercoaster that many highly processed desserts produce.
That’s one reason this recipe works equally well as:
- A healthy afternoon snack.
- A post-workout treat after exercise.
- A refreshing breakfast on hot mornings.
- A nourishing dessert after dinner.
Simple ways to make this recipe your own
One of the best things about this recipe is how easily you can adapt it throughout the year.
Tropical version
Replace the berries with frozen mango and add fresh lime zest.
Chocolate berry version
Blend in one tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder and finish with cacao nibs.
Pistachio lover’s version
Replace the almond butter with natural pistachio butter and garnish with extra chopped pistachios.
Berry & basil version
Add the optional fresh basil and lemon zest for a beautifully fresh, café-inspired flavour that pairs especially well with strawberries.
Family-friendly version
Reduce the protein powder slightly and allow children to customise their own toppings with fresh fruit, nuts and coconut flakes.
The easier healthy recipes are to personalise, the more often they become part of your everyday life.
And that’s exactly what creates lasting change.
Because the healthiest recipe isn’t the one that’s nutritionally perfect.
It’s the one you’ll genuinely look forward to making again next week.
Small choices create the biggest transformations
One of the biggest myths in nutrition is that you need dramatic changes to see meaningful results.
In my experience, the opposite is usually true.
It’s the meals you prepare every week.
The snacks you choose every afternoon.
The desserts you enjoy without guilt.
Those are the moments that shape your long-term health.
When you replace highly processed foods with simple, nourishing recipes like this Frozen Berry Protein Sundae, you’re not just making one healthier choice. You’re creating habits that support your body day after day.
That’s how sustainable change happens.
Not through perfection.
Through consistency.

Frequently asked questions
Is frozen yogurt healthier than ice cream?
It can be, but it depends on the ingredients.
Many commercial frozen yogurts contain just as much sugar as traditional ice cream. This homemade version is different because it’s naturally sweetened with berries and stevia while providing over 20g of protein, healthy fats and fibre to help keep you satisfied.
Can this recipe help with weight loss?
No single recipe causes weight loss on its own.
However, replacing a highly processed dessert with a protein-rich, fibre-rich alternative like this one can help reduce cravings, improve satiety and make it easier to maintain a calorie deficit over time.
Sustainable weight loss comes from consistent nutrition, movement, quality sleep and stress management, not from restrictive diets.
Can I make this recipe without protein powder?
Yes.
You can simply omit the protein powder and add a little more Greek yogurt to maintain a creamy consistency.
The dessert will still be delicious, although it will contain less protein and may not keep you feeling full for as long.
Is this recipe suitable for children?
Absolutely.
Children generally love the naturally sweet flavour of the berries.
If preparing it for younger children, you can simply leave out the protein powder and let them personalise their own bowl with different fruits and toppings.
Can I prepare it in advance?
Yes.
Store it in the freezer in an airtight container.
Remove it from the freezer about 15 to 20 minutes before serving to allow it to soften slightly and recover its creamy texture.
Why is psyllium included?
Psyllium is a wonderful source of soluble fibre.
It naturally thickens the frozen yogurt while supporting digestive health, promoting satiety and helping maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
It’s one of my favourite ingredients because it delivers meaningful health benefits without changing the flavour of the recipe.
Is Greek yogurt good for gut health?
Plain Greek yogurt contains live cultures that can contribute to a healthy gut microbiome when eaten as part of a balanced diet.
Combined with the fibre from berries and psyllium, it creates a delicious recipe that supports overall digestive health.
Can I enjoy this dessert if I’m trying to balance my hormones?
While no individual food can balance hormones on its own, this recipe provides high-quality protein, healthy fats and fibre that help support stable blood sugar and sustained energy. These are important foundations for overall hormonal health, particularly for women over 35.
One final thought
Healthy living shouldn’t feel restrictive.
It shouldn’t mean giving up desserts, avoiding celebrations or constantly feeling like you’re on a diet.
It should feel joyful.
It should bring people together around the table.
It should leave you feeling energised instead of deprived.
That’s exactly why I created this Frozen Berry Protein Sundae.
I hope it becomes one of those recipes you come back to throughout the summer, not because it’s “healthy”, but because it’s genuinely delicious.
And if it helps you feel a little more energised, a little more satisfied and a little more connected to your body along the way, then it’s done exactly what it was created to do.
Enjoy every spoonful.
