Karim, could you tell us about your background and what inspired you to focus on naturopathy and gut health?

Karim:  Absolutely! I’m a Registered Naturopath, Nutritional Therapist, and Health Coach from the College of Naturopathic Medicine in London. I’m also a registered Naturopath with the Association of Naturopathic Practitioners. My journey began with a personal fascination for holistic well-being, and over time, I realized that digestion is often the unsung hero behind many health transformations—helping people lose weight, gain energy, balance hormones, and reduce inflammation. Besides, as the father of medicine Hippocrates eloquently stated “All disease begins in the gut”, so that’s why I’ve made it my mission to empower others by focusing on gut health first. 

1. Why digestion matters more than we think

Q1: We often hear that poor digestion can show up as unexpected symptoms like hair loss or skin issues. How does that happen?

Karim: We may all know about the famous statement “you are what you eat”, but this is only part of the truth. We are in fact also, what we digest and absorb. Our gut is responsible for absorbing the nutrients that keep our hair strong and our skin clear. If the digestive system isn’t functioning properly, you’re missing out on essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that protect these tissues. Moreover, gut imbalance can lead to inflammation throughout the body, which may manifest as rashes, dull skin, or even hair thinning.

Even with exercise, if your body is burdened by toxins and improper nutrient absorption, you may find it harder to burn fat efficiently. Karim: Foods high in refined sugar or artificial additives tend to inflame the gut lining, disrupting the healthy bacteria we need to stay energized and balanced. This kind of inflammation can also trigger fatigue, making it harder to stay active or focus. By reducing processed foods and opting for a more anti-inflammatory diet which I also like to refer to as pro-health diet (i.e. balanced whole food organic locally grown if possible and seasonal), people often notice a natural boost in energy levels.

Karim: Hormones like cortisol and insulin are closely linked to gut function. When you’re always eating on the go or having meals in a stressful environment (leading to high cortisol levels), digestion may not work as it should. This means that even if your meals are healthy, your body might not absorb the nutrients properly, leaving you without the energy you need.

As a result, your body starts craving quick energy sources like sweets—often loaded with refined sugar, toxic additives, and trans fats, which are all pro-inflammatory. This can cause blood sugar spikes and crashes, leading to intense cravings and mood swings (high insulin), creating a vicious cycle.

Karim: Definitely! Watch out for chronic bloating, unexplained fatigue, frequent headaches, skin flare-ups, irregular bowel movement, or a general sense of malaise. Persistent constipation or diarrhea are also red flags. If you’re feeling sluggish or noticing stubborn weight gain, it might be time to explore a detox or gut-friendly reset.
